As April begins, it’s been on the windy side. For the most part, that’s typical for this time of year. I’ve been spending all my time in Pine Island Sound where the habitat is by far some of the best within our estuary system. The sea trout bite has been consistent all winter and into the early days of Spring. Moreover, as the water temperature pushes into the upper 70’s I’ve started seeing decent numbers of redfish and snook along several of my favorite shorelines. Small bait fish patterns in the #1 and 1/0 size have been working well. When the wind is too much, soft plastics on a spinning rod make for a great back up plan. Here, it’s tough to beat a paddle tail. Too, keep in mind, it’s a good idea to rig a weedless fly or plastic when working around the mangroves. In addition, tarpon are starting to show up and I’m hoping to find some away from the crowds.
