For sure, the drought is over. After what seemed like forever without rain, everything changed beginning with a system of tropical moisture that moved in from the Caribbean and now we’re back to our typical summer rain that develops daily from inland heat interacting with the cooler gulf air. As a result, our water clarity is a bit more murky and has cooled off a bit. For the most part, due to the heat fishing early is a good idea. Too, after the excessive winds of winter and spring, this time of day provides the calm slicked out conditions we look forward to all year long. For many, at first light, this is a good opportunity to look for rolling tarpon. In addition, if you can get to a favorite shoreline before the tide gets up too high there are snook and redfish prowling the edges. Typically, by the time both these windows close, it’s about time to head in. With the water being a bit darker, at first light I do like throwing gurglers.
