The backcountry fishing around Boca Grande has been consistent through the heat of summer in part due to its proximity to the cleaner and a bit cooler water flushing in from the Gulf. Flats on both sides of the Intracoastal are worth poling around and exploring. At this point in the year, this is one of the best parts of our estuary system to be on the lookout for schools of redfish that begin to school up in preparation for their spawn. Snook can be found along many of our mangrove shorelines from just off the intracoastal near Catfish and Whidden’s Creek all the way into the Bull Bay backcountry. In addition, the spotted sea trout have been active anywhere in two to three feet with Turtle Bay holding some decent fish.
